Borrowing Procedures

Using a valid AUC ID card, books may be borrowed at 3 locations in the Main Library:

  • Circulation Desk located on the 1st floor
  • Self-Checkout units located on the 1st floor next to the Circulation Desk
  • Self-Checkout unit located on the 4th floor next to the terrace

Self-Checkout units will issue a receipt that should be kept as a reminder of the due date.
If assistance is needed please do not hesitate to contact the Circulation staff.

You are accountable for items borrowed on your ID so never let another person use your ID card or borrow items for another person.

Books should be returned on or before the due date in the "Return Books" slot at the Circulation Desk, or at the library entrance. Books not returned on time to the proper location will result in a fine.

An overdue book will automatically block a patron from borrowing. The Library will send patrons with overdue books two overdue notices. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not exempt a borrower from a fine.

Fines

1. Late Return

Item Fine per working day:

From 1 - 10 days: 50 PT
After 10 days: 150 PT
Maximum Fine: 50 LE

2. Lost Items

If the item is lost the charge will be:
Fine charges + overhead charges (50LE) + replacement cost

The Library will consider an item "LOST" after 60 working days overdue.
The cost of a lost book (fines and processing fees not included) will be refunded if the book is returned within one year.

Holds, Searches and Recalls

If a book is checked out Circulation Staff can place a "hold" on the checked out item. When the item is available a notice will be sent to the patron and the book will be held for pick-up for seven days at the Circulation Desk.

If a book is not checked out and not on the shelf, a search request form may be filled out at the Circulation Desk. Staff members will search for the item. Patrons will receive a notice about the outcome of the search. Found items will be held for pick-up for seven days at the Circulation Desk.

All books are subject to recall 14 days after their first checkout date, and/or at any time for reserve use.
