Adaptive Technology Corner

The "adaptive technology corner" at Main Library allows people with disabilities to access research materials. A second "adaptive technology corner" is located at the Open Access Lab 401, Hill House 4th floor, Main Campus.

Each corner has two computers fully upgraded along with a scanner.

Powerful software has been purchased and fully tested to accommodate all needs and requirements for those with visual disabilities to have access to online materials, or printed ones.

  • JAWS for Windows is a powerful speech technology tool that helps the blind to access today’s popular software applications, in addition to the internet, and the email. JAWS uses an integrated voice synthesizer and the computer sound card to output the content of the computer screen to speakers.

  • Kurzweil 1000 with its specialized scanner allows students to have access to all printed materials like articles, journals, newspapers and books. It converts them into text using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) where a speech engine speaks out the text for the student.

  • Zoom Text is a screen magnifier that could magnify the screen to 16 times the screen size. This software is a special software program for students with low vision.
