The library is a shared academic environment designed for study, collaboration, research, and discovery. Help us keep it welcoming, safe, comfortable, accessible, and respectful for everyone by following these shared-space guidelines.
Take Care of the Furniture
Use furniture as intended. Do not stand, jump, climb, put shoes on sofas or seating, stick gum to furniture, or otherwise damage library property. Help us keep our furniture - and the floors beneath it - in good condition.
Keep Furniture Where it Belongs
Do not move furniture between areas or remove it from its designated space. Each piece has been carefully placed to support the function and flow of the space.
Handle Books and Library Materials with Care
Help keep library materials in good condition. Do not write, highlight, fold pages, or otherwise damage books and periodicals. Sharp objects and cutting tools, including knives, scissors, box cutters, and blades, are not permitted inside the library.
Keep Library Materials Accessible
Return and place library materials where directed. Do not deliberately hide or misplace materials in order to restrict their use by others.
Check out Materials Before Leaving
Make sure all library materials are properly checked out before leaving the library. This protects the collection and prevents unnecessary security-gate alarms.
Respect Specialized Spaces
Some spaces are equipped with accessibility technology and furniture designed to meet specific needs. Leave these spaces and equipment available for students who require them.
Use Library Technology Responsibly
Library computers, screens, charging stations, and other equipment are shared resources.Use them responsibly. Do not alter settings, reconfigure equipment, disconnect devices, or attach unauthorized external devices. Report any technical or physical problems to library staff.
Desktops in the 24/7 Rooms
Desktop computers provided in the 24/7 study rooms are available for academic and study-related use. Leave the workstations and equipment ready for the next user, and do not reserve or occupy a computer when you are not actively using it.
Borrowing Laptops
Library laptops are available according to the library laptop-borrowing procedure and policy. Follow the borrowing, return, and care requirements, and return equipment on time so that other students can benefit from this service.
Keep Streaming Appropriate
The library is a shared learning space. Avoid streaming content that is loud, disruptive, inappropriate, or likely to disturb or offend others. Use headphones when watching videos or listening to audio, and be mindful of the content you are viewing in a shared public environment.
Be Mindful of Your Volume
Keep conversations and group discussions at a considerate volume, especially in areas designated for quiet study. Use headphones for audio, silence ringing phones, and take calls only in designated areas where they will not disturb others.
Respect Shared-Space Boundaries
Be mindful of personal space and the rights of those studying and working around you. Treat library users and employees respectfully. Harassment, verbal or physical abuse, and behavior that interferes with others' use of the library are not acceptable.
Use Study Spaces for Studying
Use library spaces in ways that support their intended purpose. Avoid extended sleeping or other use that prevents fellow users from accessing study and seating areas.
Food and Drink
Enjoy meals and full food items in the Library Terrace. Help us keep the library clean and comfortable by keeping food out of study and seating areas. Water only is allowed inside the library.
Tobacco-Free Community
AUC is a tobacco-free community. Smoking, vaping, and the use of tobacco products are not permitted in the library or other University spaces. Help maintain a clean, healthy, and welcoming environment for everyone.
Keep Your Belongings With You
Do not leave personal belongings unattended. A written warning will be placed on unattended items. If an item remains unattended for more than one hour, it will be collected and moved to Lost & Found. The library cannot be responsible for lost or misplaced items.
Follow Closing, Emergency, and Security Instructions
Cooperate with library staff and security during closing, evacuations, emergency alarms, and security-gate alerts. Leave the building promptly when requested and follow all safety instructions.
Keep Your AUC ID Available
Be ready to show your University ID when requested by library staff or security. This helps us maintain a safe and secure environment for the AUC community.
Leave the Space Ready for the Next Person
Before you leave, take your belongings with you, dispose of any waste, return items to their proper place, and leave the space clean and ready for the next student.
Dress Appropriately for a Shared Academic Space
The library is a shared academic environment. Wear appropriate attire. Swimwear, excessively revealing or offensive clothing, costumes, mascot outfits, or attire that conceals a person’s identity are not permitted, except when authorized as part of a University activity or event.
A shared space works best when everyone helps care for it.
All library users are expected to follow the AUC Student Code of Conduct and applicable University policies. Library staff and security may take appropriate action to uphold these guidelines and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive environment for everyone.
