Urban Spaces of Cairo: Past, Present, Future

The Rare Books and Special Collections Library was a partner in the exhibition "Urban Spaces of Cairo: Past, Present, Future" at the Grand Egyptian Museum. The exhibition surveyed the evolution of urban spaces in Cairo and aspects like trade, transport and community. Much of the exhibition content was drawn from RBSCL collections of maps, photographs, rare books, architecture, and film collections, covering topics like the Nile, ancient Heliopolis and Babylon, Islamic and Khedivial Cairo, and Nasr City. The exhibition, on display in November 2024, was mounted in connection with the World Urban Forum of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Cairo Urban Week.

AUC’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library hosted a workshop on traditional Turkish Ebru art, or paper marbling, which is seen on the inside covers of many rare books and in contemporary art. The event featured artists from Turkey, Italy and Egypt, and participants included AUC students and heritage conservation centers. Supported by the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize, the event was held in collaboration with the Anna Lindh Foundation as well as Al Qalam School of Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation.
